Discontinuation of FAS Modem Pool: Wednesday, September 30

As part of an overall effort to recover costs from lesser-used services, FAS IT will discontinue its dial-up modem pool as of September 30th 2009.  Usage on the modem pool has dwindled to an average of two users a day, a level at which we can no longer justify the large expense of maintaining this service.

There are several options for those who have relied on modem access.  DSL, FIOS, and cable modem providers such as Verizon and Comcast offer significantly faster Internet access speeds than the current service.  Alternatively, third-party providers such as www.netzero.net and www.earthlink.net  are available for those who wish to continue to connect to the network from off campus using a modem.

If you have questions or concerns about the decommissioning of the FAS modem pool, please contact the FAS IT Service Desk at 617-495-9000 or help@fas.harvard.edu.
