Faculty and Staff Support: Web Hosting

FAS Information Technology provides web hosting to individual faculty, staff and students in FAS. Departments may also request web hosting for projects, conferences and other academic purposes on a case-by-case basis by contacting help@fas.harvard.edu.

FAS Information Technology provides a comprehensive web environment including the following:

  • Load Balanced UNIX servers
  • Apache Webservers
  • Centralized storage accessible from user/departmental accounts, as well as web servers
  • 24x7x365 system monitoring for web systems, located in a secure, robust machine room including power/cooling management and redundancy.
  • System support for Perl and PHP via CGI.
  • Oracle database accounts

Quotas

Personal and departmental websites are given 100mb of web-space by default.

Backups and Retrievals

Introduction

All FAS accounts are backed up on a nightly basis. In the event that files are inadvertently corrupted or deleted, please contact the FAS IT Service Desk (495-9000 or help@fas.harvard.edu) to request that the data be retrieved.  Retrievals are available for 14 days after the data was last backed up. Retrieval requests can take several days to process. Please note that any email or files that you receive or create and then subsequently delete between consecutive nightly backups will not be available for retrieval.
